For some reason today I am drawn to write something that will help you (yes you) process. I don’t know what you are going through and I usually don’t write like this, but the Holy Spirit led me here, so here we are.
Many of us struggle with being still. We live in a busy world, and we have so much easy access to whatever we want at the tips of our fingers. But, God did not design us to be always on the move. Jesus constantly took breaks from the crowds and went to a quiet place to be with his God. He needed to be away from the noise so he could listen and depend on His Father. What more of us? How can we imitate Jesus in this way?
(You might need to print this out, take a snapshot with your phone, or copy and paste this into a word file so that you can truly practice what is below)
A quiet time with God
What you’ll need: A Bible, a pen/pencil, your journal or a piece of paper or writing device, and your whole self. If you can’t really focus, save this for another time when you can.
We will be looking at Psalm 119:89-96
Step 1: Let’s read it once all the way through
89Your word, Lord, is eternal;
it stands firm in the heavens.
90 Your faithfulness continues through all generations;
you established the earth, and it endures.
91 Your laws endure to this day,
for all things serve you.
92 If your law had not been my delight,
I would have perished in my affliction.
93 I will never forget your precepts,
for by them you have preserved my life.
94 Save me, for I am yours;
I have sought out your precepts.
95 The wicked are waiting to destroy me,
but I will ponder your statutes.
96 To all perfection I see a limit,
but your commands are boundless.
Step 2: Take out your writing device and answer this question: what did it make you think of? Write as little or as much as you want.
Step 3: Now read it again slowly and just think about it.
Step 4: Read it again verse by verse and answer these questions:
Vs 89 How does it feel to think about God’s Word “standing firm in heaven?”
Vs 90 It says God “established the earth and it endures.” Do you believe the truth of God being faithful? How has God been faithful in your life recently and in the past?
Vs 91 It comforts me to think about how “all things serve God.” What about you? In a world that can look so chaotic, it says, “God’s laws endure to this day.” Do you believe that God can use everything for his glory even those that may seem contrary to his law?
Vs 92-93 Is God’s law your delight? Do you delight in the Bible and His precepts? Write out examples of how following His commands have protected you? If you can’t think of any, why do you think that is?
Vs 93-94 The author seems to be connecting God’s “precepts” and “statutes” (basically God’s teachings and principles in the Bible) to saving him. Why do you think that is? Are there any situations that you currently need saving from? On a deeper level, do you need to be saved? How can you connect God saving you with obeying his ways?
Vs 96 Do you see the perfection like the author does in God’s commands? Write about it! If you don’t see it, would you ask God to show you the perfection in his commands? Ask God to help you to see how His ways are good and perfect.
Step 5: Let’s pray!
Dear Lord, I have looked through the whole earth and I haven’t seen anyone or anything that is truly perfect. But You Lord are perfection and so are your precepts and commands. I thank you for providing guidance through your Word to navigate life. I pray that you will expose the lies I am believing about you and myself. And that you will help me to believe the truth you have revealed through Jesus. Help me to love your ways by my obedience to them. Surround me with people who can help me to know you deeper. Soften my heart to seek and find you even though you are always so near. I pray I notice this nearness even more so clearly. Amen!
Another great piece 👏. Honestly, I don’t remember the last time I had a quiet time, and spent time on the scriptures. Maybe I should start again with all alacrity.
Emmanuel, that sounds like a great idea. Let me know how it goes!
Amen!
