These four aspects have kept Black people rising

As I reflect on Black history, I recognize several aspects that have kept Black people moving despite all the ills of colonization, slavery, discrimination, living in a world where brown skin has historically not been celebrated.

  1. Our sense of humor. We have a way of making difficult situations humorous.
  2. Our sense of community. We love to come together for everything and anything, to share good food, to dance, to be silly, and to cry together.
  3. Our faith. Recognizing that there is a being greater than us, God. Knowing that we may not always explain why and how, but we can trust and go to God with our worries. We can sing and chant, offering praise and letting go of having to carry the burden alone.
  4. Our resilience. I am amazed at all the great contributions we continue to make despite the hardships of life. Maya Angelou said it best in her poem “Still I Rise.” May we keep rising!
